Background and composition

SNMG2 (Standing NATO Response Force Maritime Group 2). Units assigned to this force are mostly from countries with access to the Mediterranean, although it is quite usual to find units from north european countries. The group is usually formed with up to eight units, generally destroyers and frigates. Initially established in 1992, as Standing Naval Force Mediterranean and commonly known as STANAVFORMED. Recently changed it's original name, due to changes in NATO doctrine. Currently is one the groups forming the maritime component of NATO's Response Force (NRF). It's area of operations is usually the Mediterranean Sea.
