Comment: This ship is an old Raleigh LPD. It´s construction was authorised during FY 1961. It served as an anphibious ship until 1972, and still maintains limited capacity for its original role. Converted during 1972 at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. New communications equipment and flag command facilities installed. additional air conditioning fitted. The hangar is located on the port side of the flight deck. Deck landing spots for heavy helicopters. Reclassified as Flag Ship, and renamed AGF-3, on 1st july 1972, keeping previous "3" hull number. Has served as 5th Fleet Flag Ship. Reequipped during 1993/94, and designated 6th Fleet Flag Ship on november 1994. On February 25th 2005 the Command Flag was transferred to USS Mount Whitney.
